Comprehensive School Support Specialist | Basketball Coach & Player Development Expert

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Stephen R. Nesmith has built his life and career around the game of basketball. A former Division II standout at Clarion University, Nesmith played both power forward and center, earning recognition as one of Clarion’s Top 10 all-time leaders in blocks in a season and blocks per game. Following his collegiate career, he went on to play semi-pro basketball for the Pittsburgh Explosion, gaining valuable experience at the next level of competition.

With over 23 years of coaching and training experience, Nesmith has made a lasting impact across multiple levels of the game — from youth basketball to varsity programs. His extensive background includes:

• 15 years as a Boys’ Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach
   
• 3 years as a Boys’ Junior Varsity Basketball Head Coach
   
• 3 years as an AAU Boys’ Basketball Head Coach
   
• 11 years as a Youth Basketball Coach
   

Throughout his coaching career, Nesmith has held key roles at several respected programs, including:

• Archbishop Spalding High School (Assistant Coach, 2016–2017, HC Nick Jones)
   
• Southern High School (Assistant Coach, 2014–2016, HC Will Maynard)
   
• Long Reach High School (Assistant & JV Head Coach, 2011–2014, HC Al Moraz)
   
• Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Assistant Coach, 2005–2011, HC Brendan O’Connell)
   
• Gambrills Odenton Recreation Council (Head Coach, 2020–Present)
   

A dedicated mentor and educator, Nesmith is deeply committed to player development, strength and conditioning, and academic success. He possesses a strong working knowledge of NCAA eligibility and recruiting rules, ensuring that his athletes are prepared both on the court and in the classroom.

Currently, Stephen Nesmith serves as a Comprehensive School Support Specialist with Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), where he continues to inspire and develop student-athletes through discipline, leadership, and a lifelong love of the game.
